Offsetting

Using your tax refund or child benefit to pay your debt.

If public authorities owe you money, we may use that money to pay off your debt instead of sending it to your bank account. This process is called offsetting (modregning).

If we offset your debt, you will always receive a notice in your Digital Post. Public authorities and some private schools or daycares can ask us to collect debt from payments such as:

Your Tax Refund (overskydende skat)

Your Child and Youth Benefit (børnepenge)

Paying debt with your tax refund

If you are entitled to a tax refund, we will automatically use the amount to cover your debt—for example, unpaid taxes from previous years. This happens when your Tax Assessment (årsopgørelse) is ready.

  • Notifications: You will receive a message in your Digital Post app if we offset your tax refund.
  • Remaining funds: Any money left over after your debt is paid will be refunded to you starting in late April 2026.
  • Unresolved debt: If you have "unresolved debt" (uafklaret gæld), it will generally not delay your tax refund.

Paying debt with your child benefit

If money is deducted from your child benefit, it is because you owe money for your children's care or activities. This typically includes debt for:

  • Daycare: Such as kindergarten or nursery.
  • After-school care: (SFO).
  • Creative activities: Such as music school.

Important: Even if you are already paying off debt through your salary (withholding of income), we can still deduct money from your child benefit to pay any debt related to your child.

When is it paid? Child benefit is usually paid on the 20th of the month every three months. If the 20th is a weekend or holiday, it is paid on the first following workday.

Which debt is paid first?

When we use your refunds to pay off debt, we follow a specific legal order:

  1. The agency itself: First, we pay the agency that originally owed you the money (e.g., the Tax Agency).
  2. Other registered debt: Next, we pay debt that is currently being collected by the Danish Debt Collection Agency.
  3. Other registered debt: Finally, we cover any other debt registered in our systems.
