We may set off your debt
If you are owed money from public authorities, for example if you have paid too much tax, we may use the amount to make payment on your debt to public authorities. This is called offsetting.
From 12 April, we will start refunding overpaid tax after any set-off
If you have received your tax assessment notice for 2023 in March, and if you are to receive a tax refund, the money will typically be paid into your NemKonto account in mid-April 2024. However, we may withhold your refund for overpaid tax while we examine your and/or your spouse’s debt.

We will process your case as soon as possible and notify you if we make a set-off against your overpaid tax. When we have made a decision on set-off, you will receive any balance.
Unfortunately, we cannot speed up the refund – even if you call us or pay your debt quickly.
We can make a set-off even if you are already making payments on the debt.
Frequently asked questions about offsetting
How we set off amounts against payments from public authorities
We make set-offs in the following order:
- Debt that is collected by the public authority from which you are owed money, for example the Tax Agency
- Debt for collection with the Debt Collection Agency
- Debt for collection which is registered with the Debt Collection Agency.
You can read more about the rules on offsetting in section A.D.13.2 Modregning (Offsetting) of our Danish-language legal guide, which you can find at www.skat.dk/juridiskvejledning.
